The study analyses indicators on economic matters, quality of life, social cohesion, the labour market, prices, innovation, etc., that put the city in a leading role in sectors such as technology, science and research.

The Catalan capital also appears in notable positions in other rankings, such as:

  • Best European city in strategy for attracting foreign investment
  • Eighth most attractive city for foreign talent to work in
  • Third favourite European city for start-ups
  • Ninth most innovative European city

Women’s employment in the city is at a record level (77.9%), while entrepreneurial activity among women has grown to 6.8%, reducing the difference in this category with men to just one per cent.

The report for 2023 by the Barcelona Observatory, an initiative promoted by the City Council and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, this year reaches its 21st edition.
