84 varieties to admire!

21 breeders from 8 different countries participated in the 17th Barcelona International New Rose Competition, presenting a total of 84 new rose varieties to the competition (there were 92 the previous year).

They include 19 hybrid tea and grandiflora varieties, 41 repeat flowering floribunda varieties, 11 landscape shrub varieties, 1 miniature variety, a carpet rose and 10 climbing varieties. This year’s participating countries are Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, United States, France, Uruguay, Italy and The Netherlands.

The international jury, responsible for selecting the best roses, is made up of 80 experts from the rose breeding world and awards prizes to the roses based on their vigour, development, foliage, fragrance, resistance to plagues, durability or interest of the flower and novelty, among other features.

All the rose species in the competition are created by rose breeders by hybridising already existing species. They are unprecedented and have never been sold to the public. To obtain a new rose species, rose breeders need about ten years of work before they can present the new species to the competition and market it.
