The refugee crisis caused by the war in Syria has led to various professional associations in Barcelona publicly showing their support for the refugees’ cause.
The doctors’ association, Col·legi Oficial de Metges de Barcelona (COMB), has committed to “being on the side of refugees” and guaranteeing their “right to health protection”. It has also issued a statement explaining it will promote specific volunteer proposals among its professionals to assist with receiving refugees.
The nurses’ association, Col·legi Oficial d’Infermers i Infermeres de Barcelona (COIB), has opened a public register on its website for volunteers from its ranks to sign up to help the cause. Volunteers must specify their specialist areas and experience as well as languages. The register is strictly for health professionals.
In order to offer psychological support to refugees arriving in Catalonia, the psychologists’ association, Col·legi Oficial de Psicologia de Catalunya (COPC), is also offering to help. The association has over 300 collegiate psychologists with experience including clinical, crisis, bereavement and emergency psychology with sufficient Arabic and English language skills to offer dual and family assistance.
The lawyers’ association, the Il·lustre Col·legi de Procuradors dels Tribunals de Barcelona (ICPB), and the barristers’ association, Il·lustre Col·legi d’Advocacia de Barcelona (ICAB), also condemn the “infrahuman situation the refugees are in”, and both entities have expressed their will to help authorities and institutions “to work efficiently to find a solution for this human drama”.
